Ladies, Pray for Your Future Husband

As a single woman, do you think it’s important to pray for your future husband? I’ve prayed for him occasionally, but I’ve honestly never committed to doing it on a regular basis. Recently, however, I’ve been thinking more about the qualities I’d like to see in my future husband and the different ways I could be praying for him. If you’re not doing so already, I’d encourage you to consider praying for your future husband and marriage!

Why Pray for Your Future Husband?

I believe that a healthy marriage is centered around Christ. And I don’t think I have to wait until I meet my husband before I can pray for him. I also don’t have to wait until I meet my future husband to start focusing my life more on Christ. While I have no idea of who my future husband is, where he is at, or when we will meet, I’m confident that God knows all those details. And I’m convinced that He can work in my life and my future husband’s life to prepare us for marriage, whenever that may take place. Scripture makes it abundantly clear that prayer is powerful. And as believers, we’re called to be in unceasing prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

Praying with the Right Heart

When praying for your future husband, make sure that your heart is in the right place. Scripture warns us that prayers that are asked for the wrong reasons won’t be answered.

You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.

James 4:3 (NKJV)

As I pray for my future husband, I want to avoid having selfish or materialistic motivations. In addition, I want to pray with faith and sincerity of heart. The focus should be on God and His will, and not myself and what I selfishly want.

First and foremost, I need my future husband to be committed to Christ. If he is committed to his relationship with God, he will treat me with respect and honor. And our marriage will flourish because it’s centered on Christ.

How to Pray for Your Future Husband

Familiarize Yourself with Godly Character

In order to pray for your future husband, it’s important to know what you should pray about. In order to do this, I pulled out my Bible and began searching in Scripture for passages related to Christian character. As I found applicable verses, I wrote them down in a journal.

Make a List of What to Pray About

After I finished by research, I put together a list of qualities that I’d like to see in a godly future husband. Additionally, I jotted down a few other ideas I had in mind. Of course, this list is by no means exhaustive (it’s probably better that it isn’t)! But it gives me a general idea of what to pray about.

Examples of What to Pray About

Here are some examples of what I’m praying for my future husband:

  • A love for God
  • A love for family
  • Purity
  • Integrity
  • Godly companions
  • Courage
  • Christian leadership
  • Diligence
  • A love for his country
  • A love of learning
  • Humility and a teachable spirit
  • Actively growing in his relationship with the Lord
  • A servant’s heart
  • Respects others
  • Daily demonstration of the Fruits of the Spirit

Does this mean I expect my future husband to be perfect? Absolutely not! But I do believe there is power in prayer. And since I want to have a strong marriage, I think it’s important to bathe our future relationship in prayer before it even starts!

Try a Prayer Journal

Why Use a Prayer Journal?

To be perfectly honest, I’ve never really got into the idea of using prayer journals. But recently, I realized that having a written record of prayers could be a blessing. For instance, it gives me the opportunity to look back on how God has answered my prayers. It also has helped me to get into the habit of praying consistently.

Using a prayer journal for my future husband also encourages me to begin examining my own character. If I want to see certain qualities in my future husband, I’m certain he’ll want to find excellent character in me as well! As a result, my prayers often encompass both my future husband and I.

How to Use a Prayer Journal

Personally, I just use a nice journal with lined paper. I tend to write the date at the top and then proceed with documenting my prayer.

How often you write prayers for your future husband is completely up to you. Up to this point, I’ve recorded prayers for him somewhere between daily to once a week. Typically, I focus on a specific area with each prayer. For example, I recently prayed that my future husband would be equipped with courage to stand for the truth no matter what the cost may be. I also prayed that God would equip me to stand firm in my convictions alongside my husband.

Conclusion

Ladies, I encourage you to pray for your future husband. You may not know who that man is yet. And that’s okay! God’s ability to answer prayer isn’t dependent upon our knowledge. He is Sovereign and He can answer our prayers in mighty ways. And as you pray for your future husband and his character, take time to examine your own life. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal areas in which you need to grow. And allow the Lord to help you address the areas in your life that He reveals!
