The Importance of Having Godly Friends

What makes a good friend? This is an important question. Many people seek good friends and try to be a good friend. But as believers, I think it’s necessary to ask what makes a godly friend. Scripture makes it clear that friends play an influential role in people’s lives!

What are Friends?

According to Noah Webster, a friend is the following.

FRIEND, noun frend.

1. One who is attached to another by affection; one who entertains for another sentiments of esteem, respect and affection, which lead him to desire his company, and to seek to promote his happiness and prosperity; opposed to foe or enemy.

From this definition, we can see that a friend is someone who genuinely cares for another person. As a result, they treat those people with respect and try to promote their well-being and happiness.

The Importance of Choosing Friends Wisely

Scripture provides us with many warnings about choosing poor companions. For instance, we’re told that if we’re friends with a someone who has anger issues, we may become like him (Prov. 22:24-25). Similarly, we’re warned against keeping company with fools (Prov. 13:20) and people who are divisive (Prov. 17:9). And it’s equally important for each of us to be godly friends as well!

Set a Godly Example

1 Timothy 4:12 (NKJV)

Conclusion

As Christians, we’re called to be godly friends. And we’re called to choose friends wisely. Oftentimes, the people we hang out with greatly influence our character, even if we don’t realize it. In closing, I’d like to encourage you to consider what kind of friends you surround yourself with. And, think about what kind of a friend you are!
